Hard times for Coach Otto Addo

Former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has revealed he is eager to return to the touchline after leaving the Ghana national team, insisting his passion for coaching remains as strong as ever.

The 51-year-old, who recently served as a member of FIFA’s Technical Study Group during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, says he is ready for the next phase of his career and is open to working either as a head coach or an assistant coach.

Speaking in an interview with German football magazine 11Freunde, Addo explained that while he still wants to prove himself as a head coach, he would also find fulfillment in an assistant coaching role.

“Yes, I’m at a certain age now. And I do believe that I want to continue as a coach or assistant coach. Assistant coach work, I think, will also bring me a lot of joy, and, of course, in certain areas I would also naturally very much like to prove myself as a coach,” Addo said.

The former Borussia Dortmund assistant also reflected on the personal sacrifices that come with a career in elite football, admitting that his family has had to make significant compromises over the years.

A father of three, Addo acknowledged that the demands of coaching have often taken him away from home.

“I have a family; three children have sacrificed a lot, a lot of time for football and less for the family,” he said.

Although he remains committed to football, Addo dismissed suggestions that he could move into a technical director or administrative role in the near future, saying such a position would require a level of commitment that does not align with his current ambitions.

“I’m someone who, if he does something, wants to do it right, and that is just brutally time-consuming,” he added.

Addo’s time with the Black Stars

Addo’s comments come four months after the Ghana Football Association brought an end to his second spell as Black Stars head coach on March 31.

During his tenure, he successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but came under intense scrutiny after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Following his departure, Addo joined FIFA’s Technical Study Group for the 2026 World Cup, contributing his tactical expertise throughout the tournament.

Despite stepping away from international management, the former Ghana coach has made it clear that he is not ready to leave the dugout. With his experience in both club and international football, Addo is now looking forward to a fresh challenge as he seeks to continue his coaching journey.
