Mere weeks after William Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from Nigeria’s National Men’s Football Team, the Super Eagles, another veteran player has announced that he is hanging his national team boots.

Long tenured Super Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa, announced his retirement from competing in the national team after over a decade of service. His announcement comes just before the start of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco on December 21.

With Nigeria, Musa won the African Cup of Nations in 2013 and was part of the Nigeria group that finished second at the 2023 AFCON behind Cote D’Ivoire. He won bronze with Nigeria at the competition in 2019.

The 33 year old who plays for Nigerian League side Kano Pillars and was made General Manager of the team in July, 2025, made the announcement via a heartfelt message on social media.

Having made 111 appearances to become the most capped Super Eagle, Musa reflected on his career in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) page stating,

“I wore this badge with pride for 15 years. From a 17 year old boy answering every call to becoming the most capped Super Eagle…Captain. Servant. Believer. I gave everything. Thank You Nigeria…my heart will always beat green.”

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C at the 2025 AFCON with Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda.
