Nii Lantey Vanderpuye: GFA has become a ‘Ghana Black Stars association’ rather than a Ghana Football Association

Former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has criticised the Ghana Football Association (GFA), arguing that the association has become too focused on the senior national team, the Black Stars, rather than the overall development of football in the country.

Speaking to Akoma FM, Vanderpuye questioned the association’s priorities and suggested that its approach does not adequately reflect the broader responsibilities expected of Ghana’s football governing body.

“The current football association is Ghana Black Stars association and not Ghana football association,” he said in Akoma FM.

The comment highlights concerns about whether sufficient attention is being given to the various components of Ghanaian football, including domestic competitions, grassroots development, youth football and the women’s game.

Although the Black Stars remain a major symbol of national pride and attract significant public attention, the development of football in Ghana extends beyond the senior men’s national team. It also requires investment in local clubs, young players, coaching, officiating, infrastructure and the systems that support football at different levels.

Vanderpuye’s remarks suggest that the GFA’s responsibilities should not be measured solely by the performance of the Black Stars but also by its contribution to the growth and sustainability of the wider football ecosystem.

At the grassroots level, sustained support for youth competitions, training facilities and talent identification is essential to building a strong pipeline of players for the future. Without effective structures, talented young footballers may struggle to access the opportunities needed to progress in their careers.

The Ghana Premier League and lower divisions also form an important part of the country’s football structure. Stronger domestic competitions can provide regular playing opportunities, improve the development of local talent and create a more attractive environment for sponsors and investors.

Women’s football and the country’s youth national teams equally require consistent attention, adequate resources and competitive preparation. A football association with a broad development mandate is expected to support these areas alongside its responsibilities to the Black Stars.

Vanderpuye’s criticism therefore raises a wider question about how the GFA distributes its attention and resources among the different aspects of the game. It also places the spotlight on the need for football development policies that benefit clubs, players, coaches, administrators and supporters throughout the country.

The Black Stars will continue to occupy a central position in Ghana’s sporting ambitions, but the long-term progress of the national team is closely connected to the strength of the domestic football system that produces and develops players.

His comments have added to the debate over the direction of Ghanaian football and the need for the country’s football authorities to demonstrate their commitment to developing the game at every level.
