Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey believes the next Black Stars head coach must have a deep understanding of the wider challenges affecting Ghana football and not focus only on the senior national team.
Ghana are currently searching for a new coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz after a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Sports Ministry have constituted a five-member committee to lead the recruitment process and recommend a suitable candidate for the vacant position.
Lamptey, however, insists the appointment must go beyond finding a coach who can manage the Black Stars, arguing that the country’s football challenges require a broader solution.
“We have to make sure that the next person we appoint will know our situation,” Lamptey told 3Sports.
“It is not about the Black Stars; our football has gone down.”
The former Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven star believes the incoming coach must understand issues affecting player development, domestic football and the overall structure of the game in Ghana.
The Black Stars have endured a difficult start to their AFCON qualifying campaign, losing 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in Accra after taking a two-goal lead.
The results have intensified scrutiny on Ghana football leadership, especially after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Ghana will attempt to revive their qualification hopes when they face Somalia in a double-header in October, with both matches scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium.
