The inaugural African Football League (AFL) is poised to highlight the presence of Africa’s highest-ranked football clubs.

The overarching objective is to exhibit the essence of African club football while affording football enthusiasts across the globe an opportunity to witness the pinnacle of the sport on the continent.

A collaborative effort between the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, the inaugural AFL will feature a total of eight participating teams.

These select teams have emerged from three distinct African Regional Blocks: North Region, Central-West Region, and South-East Region.

Representing the North Region, three eminent clubs are set to partake: Al Ahly Football Club hailing from Egypt, Espérance Sportive de Tunis based in Tunisia, and Wydad Athletic Club originating from Morocco.

The Central-West Region will find representation through Nigeria’s Enyimba Football Club and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Tout Puissant Mazembe.

Within the South-East Region, the stage will be shared by Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club of South Africa, Atlético Petróleos de Luanda from Angola, and Simba Sports Club hailing from Tanzania.

Marked on the calendar is the draw for the inaugural AFL competition, scheduled to unfold in Cairo, Egypt, on September 2, 2023.
