South Africa lost 4-2 on penalties in a fiercely contested match in Bouake against Nigeria on Wednesday.
Nigeria took the lead in the second half through skipper William Troost-Ekong’s penalty kick in the 67th minute.
South Africa levelled in in the 90th minute through Teboho Mokoena’s excellent spot-kick. The game travelled to extra time and after no winner was found, the Super Eagles triumphed 4-2 on penalties.
Speaking to the press after the game, South Africa’s 27-year-old Mamelodi Sundown’s powerful midfielder, Teboho Mokoena revealed that they still can get the 3rd place on Saturday.
“No one gave us a chance. We can still get the 3rd position on Saturday,” said Mokena.
Ahead of the AFCON, many pundits wrote South Africa off but they have proved their doubters wrong by reaching the semi-finals with an incredible display.
Bafana Bafana will play against the Leopards of DR Congo who lost 1-0 against the host, Ivory Coast, on Wednesday night in Abidjan for the 3rd/4th placed match on Saturday.
