Former Ghana Football Association vice-president George Afriyie has urged the GFA to avoid a hurried decision in appointing a new Black Stars head coach following the departure of Otto Addo.
The Ghana Football Association has confirmed Addo’s exit from the senior national team after a difficult run of results in pre-World Cup friendlies, including a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna and a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, Afriyie believes the focus should not be on speed, but on securing the right long-term leadership for the team.
“There should be no rush to appoint a new coach,” he said.
He stressed the importance of wider consultation and a strategic appointment that goes beyond the tournament itself.
“The FA must carry out broader consultations and appoint a good coach not just for the World Cup, but also for a long-term project beyond it,” Afriyie added.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico, followed by another warm-up clash against Wales as preparations intensify for the global showpiece.
Ghana will head into the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
The tournament will mark Ghana’s fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, as the nation looks to improve on past performances on the global stage.
