The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has refuted claims that Andre Ayew compelled the coaching staff to bring him on during Ghana’s crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Mozambique.
The Black Stars faced elimination after a disappointing group stage performance, and Ayew’s involvement in the final game drew criticism.
Asante Twum clarified that Ayew did not force his way into the game but instead followed instructions for set pieces and corner kicks.
“André did not force anyone to bring him on,” he said.
”He was shown what to do during set pieces and Conner kicks,’’ he added.
Ghana’s AFCON campaign ended with a third-place finish in the group, marked by a lack of victories and untimely defensive errors, extending the nation’s AFCON title drought to 42 years.
