National Sports Authority (NSA) boss, Peter Twumasi, swiftly responded to Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku’s criticism regarding the closure of the Accra Sports Stadium.
Okraku had expressed dissatisfaction with the stadium being closed to football clubs in December for musical concerts.
In a Facebook post, Kurt Okraku condemned the NSA’s actions under Twumasi’s leadership, stating, “What the NSA has done to football and sports in this month should never happen again. It’s just not acceptable!!!”
In response, Peter Twumasi expressed disappointment in Okraku’s comments, highlighting that the NSA had requested $2 million from the 2022 World Cup funds for sports facility maintenance. Twumasi questioned why Okraku did not support this request, emphasizing the need for cooperation between the NSA and the GFA for the benefit of sports infrastructure.
“It’s quite unfortunate [Kurt Okraku] made such a response to the NSA. I made a request of $2m from the World Cup money for the facility maintenance, what stopped him from supporting my request?,” Twumasi stated, as reported by Kumasi-based Nhyira FM.
The closure of the Accra Sports Stadium has sparked discussions about the financial challenges faced by sports authorities in maintaining crucial facilities.
This decision, announced in November 2023, affected football clubs like Hearts of Oak, Great Olympics, and Accra Lions, raising concerns about the impact on Premier League home games and sports events in the capital.
