Former Ghana Football Association chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has called for Carlos Queiroz to remain in charge of the Black Stars despite Ghana’s difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ghana have suffered defeats in their opening two Group C matches, leaving the four-time African champions without a point from their first two games.
The Black Stars began their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering another setback against The Gambia.
Ghana appeared to be in control after taking a two-goal lead against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, but the visitors staged a strong comeback to win the encounter 4-2.
The back-to-back defeats have increased pressure on Queiroz, with sections of the public and football community questioning whether the Portuguese coach should continue in his position.
Despite the criticism, Nyaho-Tamakloe has called for patience and believes the experienced coach should be allowed more time to work with the team.
“With the present coach, I will say he should be just left alone. Absolutely, he should remain,” the Hearts of Oak board member told Citi FM.
Nyaho-Tamakloe argued that Queiroz should not be blamed entirely for the defeat to The Gambia, insisting that the Portuguese coach has already demonstrated his ability to guide Ghana at the international level.
“What we saw yesterday [against The Gambia] was not his fault. He is a good stopgap coach, and he showed it when he took us to the World Cup. Such a coach, you don’t throw him away.”
His comments come at a time when the Black Stars are facing renewed scrutiny following their disappointing opening results in the AFCON qualifying campaign.
The defeat to The Gambia was particularly damaging because Ghana had established a two-goal advantage before losing control of the match.
For Nyaho-Tamakloe, however, replacing the coach at this stage could create another challenge for the national team.
“If we did that, looking for another coach will not be easy. Another coach who can bring these boys up will not be easy, I can assure you.”
He further urged the Ghana Football Association and other stakeholders not to increase the pressure on Queiroz following the poor start.
“Nobody should sack him, or nobody should put pressure on him.”
Queiroz was retained after guiding Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a campaign that ended a 16-year wait for the Black Stars to progress beyond the group stage of the global tournament.
His continued presence on the Black Stars bench has therefore become a major talking point following the team’s struggles in the AFCON qualifiers.
Ghana’s current position in Group C means the team faces an early challenge to revive its qualification campaign.
The Black Stars also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, making qualification for the next tournament another important objective for the national team.
Ghana will have an opportunity to respond when the AFCON qualifiers resume in November.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in back-to-back Group C fixtures at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Those matches will provide Queiroz and his players with an opportunity to collect points and attempt to rebuild their position in the group.
Nyaho-Tamakloe believes the focus should remain on supporting the coach and allowing him to continue working with the squad rather than making another immediate change in the technical team.
