German-born Ghanaian defender Derrick Kohn has sealed a permanent switch to Union Berlin from Turkish giants Galatasaray in a deal reported to be worth just under €5 million.
The 26-year-old left-back, who spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen, returns to the Bundesliga with the aim of strengthening Union’s left flank as the club prepares for the new campaign.
Kohn was a standout performer for Bremen in the 2024/25 season, making 30 Bundesliga appearances. His pace, power, and surging forward runs quickly established him as one of the most reliable full-backs in the league. Impressed by his performances, Union Berlin moved swiftly to secure his services permanently.
A product of the Hamburger SV academy, Kohn joined Bayern Munich’s youth setup in 2017, where he excelled with their U-23 team. His career then took him abroad with Dutch side Willem II before returning to Germany with Hannover 96. In 2023, he moved to Galatasaray but soon found himself back in the Bundesliga with Bremen, where he made an immediate impact — scoring on his debut against Mainz in February 2024.
Now at Union Berlin, Kohn is expected to provide both defensive solidity and attacking thrust as the club looks to build on its growing stature in German football.
