Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Ogum has stepped up to defend his goalkeeper, Frederick Asare, who faced criticism following a surprise long-range goal conceded in Kotoko’s 2-1 loss to Legon Cities.

The defeat, which was Kotoko’s first of the Ghana Premier League season, saw Asare caught off guard by a powerful strike from Albert Yeboah just outside the penalty box.

Despite the scrutiny, Ogum expressed his full confidence in Asare, who also serves as a regular call-up for the Black Stars. “I think he is a competent goalkeeper,” Ogum said in a post-match interview. “It’s just that we lost, but to us, he’s a good goalkeeper. We have solid goalkeepers; it’s unfortunate that it happened this way.”

The coach’s words underscored his commitment to supporting his players through challenging moments, emphasizing that the team is already addressing areas for improvement ahead of their next match. Kotoko, currently second in the league, will look to rebound as they face Heart of Lions on Sunday in Obuasi.

Ogum and his squad remain focused on regaining momentum, confident that Asare and the rest of the team will rise to the challenge in the upcoming fixtures.
