Coach Otto Addo of Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, has revealed his plans to decide on the team’s number one goalkeeper during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June. This decision comes ahead of the upcoming international friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda.
Four goalkeepers were initially called up, but David Akologo, based in Bolivia, withdrew from the squad. Currently, Jojo Wollacot, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, and Frederick Asare are the three goalkeepers in camp.
In the recent friendly against Nigeria, Ati-Zigi, who plays for St. Gallen in Switzerland, started in goal as the Black Stars faced a 2-1 defeat. However, Addo emphasized that he hasn’t finalized the choice for the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. He expressed his intention to observe the goalkeepers at the club level and make a decision during the World Cup qualifiers in June.
Regarding the goalkeepers, Addo provided insights into their performances. He praised Ati-Zigi for his consistency, highlighting his regular playing time at the club level. Addo also commended Asare, describing him as new and young, with impressive calmness and technique. However, he acknowledged the challenge with Wollacott, who is currently not playing regularly for his club, making it difficult to determine his status as the number one goalkeeper.
Addo mentioned his plan to give Wollacott a chance to showcase his skills in the upcoming match against Uganda. He emphasized the importance of closely monitoring the goalkeepers’ performances and observing their development before making a final decision.
Despite the uncertainty in the goalkeeper position, Addo’s team aims to maintain their dominance over Uganda. Ghana holds a favorable head-to-head record of 7-3 against Uganda, with their most recent encounter in 2017 resulting in a goalless draw during the World Cup qualifiers.
