Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is now Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper following his impressive performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper earned his maiden call-up in March and was handed his debut in Ghana’s dominant 5-0 victory over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21. Asare retained his starting spot for the match against Madagascar, where he kept another clean sheet in a 3-0 win on Monday night, helping the Black Stars extend their lead at the top of Group I to five points.
Speaking to *3Sports* after the game, Addo acknowledged Asare’s form and the competitive atmosphere among Ghana’s goalkeepers.
“I think the next game is in June, and at the moment, he’s the number one. We decided for him. He did well in training. We have a good situation where the keepers are pushing each other,” Addo said.
The Black Stars coach also praised goalkeepers Lawrence Ati Zigi and Jojo Wollacott, who supported Asare despite not featuring in the two matches.
“[I am] really thankful for the way Ati Zigi and Wollacott also behaved during this week and the way they tried to push Benjamin, help him, and support him. I don’t take it for granted. Big props to them. [Asare] deserved it. I’m very happy for him.”
Ghana now sits atop Group I with 15 points and is in a strong position to qualify for the World Cup for the fifth time in the nation’s history.
