Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has shed light on his choice to start Benjamin Asare in Ghana’s 5-0 triumph over Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Despite having first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi available, Addo opted for Asare, a decision that sparked some debate.
The coach explained that Asare’s strong performances in training gave him the edge over the other goalkeepers.
“We assessed all our goalkeepers and watched several games. It was a close call, but Benjamin stood out in training,” Addo stated.
The 32-year-old Hearts of Oak shot-stopper repaid his coach’s faith by keeping a clean sheet as Ghana cruised to a dominant victory, moving to the top of Group I.
Though some questioned the decision, Asare proved to be a solid presence in goal, making crucial saves when needed. His performance added to Ghana’s confidence ahead of their crucial clash against Madagascar on Monday.
