Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has offered a detailed explanation for his decision to remove Alexandre Djiku from his role as deputy captain of the national team.
In excerpts from Otto Addo’s technical report on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), shared by Angel FM, the coach expressed dissatisfaction with the commitment shown by the Turkey-based defender.
According to the report, Otto Addo was particularly upset by what he perceived as a misleading statement made by Djiku regarding his reporting time for Ghana’s game against Sudan in Accra. Addo revealed that he had expected Djiku to arrive in time for the match on Friday, but Djiku claimed he had a game scheduled for the following Saturday.
However, the technical team later discovered that Djiku had no match that weekend, which angered Addo and led to his decision to strip the defender of the vice-captaincy.
The Black Stars, led by captain Kudus Mohammed, played to a goalless draw against Sudan on October 15, 2023. The team then suffered a loss in their away match against Libya.
Addo’s future as head coach of the Black Stars remains uncertain after Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The team ended the qualification campaign with no wins, three losses, and three draws, finishing at the bottom of a group that included Angola, Sudan, and Niger.
