His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Life Patron of the Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, has urged for the revival of the partnership between his club and MTN, the country’s leading telecommunication company.

During a courtesy visit from MTN’s new CEO, Stephen Blewett, at the Manhyia Palace on June 26, 2024, Otumfuo emphasized the importance of reinstating the sponsorship agreement that previously provided financial and in-kind support to the Kumasi-based football club.

Mr. Blewett expressed his commitment to strengthening the relationship between MTN and the Palace, highlighting the significance of the longstanding partnership.

“I want us to continue the relationship that exists between Your Majesty, the Kingdom, the people and MTN. We have a long relationship and we keep that relationship close to our heart. It’s important to us and we want to continue holding to that relationship.”

In response, Otumfuo called for the reestablishment of the sponsorship, citing the positive impact it had on Asante Kotoko.

“MTN is Manhyia’s very good friend and the sponsorship I think you have to look at it…Golf and Kotoko. Look at those two for me, especially Kotoko and then the family can then grow.”

The Management of MTN assured Otumfuo of a favorable response, indicating their willingness to review the sponsorship agreement.

The partnership between MTN and Asante Kotoko dates back to 2001, with the company providing financial support, airtime, products, and other benefits to the football club.

Despite a temporary halt in the sponsorship in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both parties are eager to reignite their collaboration for the benefit of Asante Kotoko and its supporters.

Additionally, Otumfuo has been personally covering the financial obligations of Asante Kotoko since the dissolution of the Club’s Board in 2023, underscoring his unwavering commitment to the team’s success.
