Sudan head coach Kwasi Appiah says his team is targeting nothing less than winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following their historic victory over Equatorial Guinea.
The Ghanaian coach guided Sudan to a 1-0 win in their second Group E match, marking the country’s first AFCON victory in 13 years. An own goal by Equatorial Guinea defender Saul Coco in the 74th minute sealed the important win for Sudan and boosted their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage.
Speaking after the match, Appiah said he was pleased with the result but stressed that the team’s ambition goes beyond just one win.
“I am happy with the victory, but our goal is to win the tournament, not just celebrate one match,” he said confidently.
The former Black Stars coach praised his players for their experience and strong performance, despite facing some challenges during the game.
“We have experienced players, and they showed good quality. Even when things were difficult, we tried to play well and get the result. I want to thank everyone who supported us, especially the fans,” Appiah added.
Appiah also made it clear that Sudan did not come to the tournament just to participate.
“When you enter a competition like this, the aim is to move past the group stage and go as far as possible. We have achieved something important, and we are focused on reaching the highest stage,” he said.
Sudan will play Burkina Faso next, and a draw will be enough to secure a place in the Round of 16.
