Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko have been handpicked by Parliament to compete in its inaugural Democracy Cup, marking the 30th anniversary of the legislative body.
Scheduled for Friday, July 5, 2024, the match will feature a curtain-raiser between Members of Parliament and former Black Stars players at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, revealed the exciting news in the parliamentary chamber. He also announced that the winner of the Hearts vs. Kotoko clash would earn the chance to play against United States-based club DC United in Washington.
“Due to the good works of this parliament, a few partners and stakeholders decided to support our work and proposed to us the establishment of what they refer to as the Democracy Cup,” Rt. Hon. Bagbin stated, highlighting the significance of Parliament’s achievements over the years.
Last year marked the 30th anniversary since Parliament’s establishment in 1993, coinciding with the implementation of the 1992 Constitution and the restoration of democratic governance in Ghana.
In addition to the Democracy Cup, commemorative activities include parliamentary sittings, debates, peace walks, and other recreational events to celebrate the milestone.
