Antoine Semenyo and Pep Guardiola have been at the centre of praise following Manchester City’s impressive away victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.

Antoine Semenyo once again delivered when it mattered most, scoring the opening goal as Manchester City secured a 2-0 win at St James’ Park. The Ghanaian forward broke the deadlock shortly after the break, setting City on course before Ryan Cherki wrapped up the win deep into stoppage time.

Pep Guardiola commended the 26-year-old for his sharp instincts in front of goal, noting that Semenyo consistently rises to the occasion whenever the opportunity presents itself. The City manager admitted his side lacked rhythm in the first half but was pleased with the improvement after the restart, especially in attack.

Guardiola explained that Semenyo and Erling Haaland initially struggled to link up, but their understanding grew significantly in the second half, leading to a more dangerous and purposeful City performance. He also acknowledged the solid development Semenyo enjoyed at his former club, adding that the forward’s ability to be in the right place at the right time stands out.

Semenyo came close to grabbing a second goal on the night, but the effort was overturned after a video review. Guardiola played down the incident, stressing the importance of staying focused as the competition enters its crucial phase.

The latest strike takes Semenyo’s total to 12 goals in all competitions this season, underlining his strong start to life at Manchester City following his move from AFC Bournemouth. Attention now turns to the weekend, where the Ghanaian forward will aim to maintain his fine form in the highly anticipated Manchester derby against Manchester United.
