President John Dramani Mahama has advised Ghanaian fans planning to travel to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to strictly adhere to immigration laws and return home after the tournament.
The President warned that visa overstays by supporters could threaten Ghana’s recently restored travel privileges, including access to five-year non-immigrant visas.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, Mahama expressed concern over previous international events where some Ghanaians failed to return after their visas expired.
He noted that authorities expect Ghana to ensure supporters travelling to the competition comply fully with visa conditions, stressing that significant effort had gone into removing the country from travel restrictions.
Mahama cautioned that widespread visa violations during the World Cup could risk Ghana being placed back on a travel ban list.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to attract large numbers of Ghanaian supporters. The Black Stars will base their camp at Bryant University and are scheduled to face Panama, England, and Croatia during the group stage of the tournament.
