Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz has called on Ghanaians to trust the players selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting difficult decisions were necessary to build a balanced squad capable of competing at the tournament.

Speaking after announcing his final squad, the Portuguese coach struck a hopeful but realistic tone, saying the team’s objective is to bring joy to the nation while acknowledging that squad selection will always generate debate.

“My message is positive, a message of hope. We dream of success at this World Cup, bringing joy and happiness to the people,” Queiroz said.

“But I must also deliver a realistic message. Football is a game of opinions. That’s the beauty of it. All opinions are valid.”

The former Real Madrid and Portugal coach acknowledged the discussions surrounding players who missed out but stressed that his responsibility is to build a united team rather than focus on individual exclusions.

“For us coaches, it’s about inclusion. Exclusion is for commentators, press, fans. They can enjoy talking about exclusion. My job is inclusion,” he explained.

Queiroz revealed that while only 26 players could be selected, he considered a much larger pool during the decision-making process.

“They give me 26 players, but I have 29 in my head. The rule is 36. Today I decide 26. Tomorrow, in different circumstances, we make different decisions.”

The Ghana coach said balance across all areas of the team was more important than simply selecting the best individual players in every position.

“I can’t pick 10 goalkeepers or 12 wingers, even if they’re the best. We need balance, harmony.”

He also defended some of the difficult calls made ahead of the tournament, insisting leadership often requires unpopular decisions.

“Leadership isn’t about popular or comfortable decisions. It’s about making the right decisions.”

Queiroz concluded by expressing confidence in the squad at his disposal and believes Ghana possess the options needed to cope with different challenges during the World Cup.

“So: enjoy, but trust. These players are, under these circumstances, the ones I believe are ready as a team to perform better.”

The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in the remaining Group L fixtures.
