Carlos Queiroz has suggested that the conditions he needed to build a stronger Black Stars team were not fully established before his departure as Ghana head coach.
In his farewell statement following the termination of his agreement with the Ghana Football Association, the Portuguese coach said he arrived in Ghana with the intention of building a stronger future for the national team and supporting the development of the country’s football talent.
“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” Queiroz said.
The former Black Stars coach said he was leaving his position with “respect, gratitude and pride” after his second spell in charge of the national team.
He also expressed appreciation to his technical staff and others who supported the team, particularly during preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I thank my technical staff and everyone who supported us, particularly since the start of our work, preparing World Cup 2026,” he said.
Queiroz reserved special praise for the Black Stars players, commending their commitment and urging Ghanaians to continue supporting the team despite its recent difficulties.
“Above all, I pay tribute to the players of the Black Stars. Thank you to all of them who represented Ghana with courage, commitment and pride. You fought for your country and carried the hopes of millions,” he said.
His departure follows Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with the Black Stars losing their opening two Group C matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.
Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before losing 4-2 to The Gambia in Accra, despite taking a two-goal lead in the latter encounter.
Following the defeat to The Gambia, Queiroz indicated that the decision regarding his future rested with the Ghana Football Association, bringing further attention to the challenges facing the national team.
His departure leaves Ghana searching for a new head coach, while questions remain over the technical direction, administration and long-term development of the Black Stars.
