Reports suggest that Bechem United striker Hafiz Wontah Konkoni is in line to receive a late call-up to the Black Stars squad for the crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Madagascar.
The 23-year-old Ghana Premier League player has caught the attention of the Black Stars coaching staff, and sources indicate that he may be called upon to replace the injured Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams. Williams had to withdraw from the squad due to concerns over an injury sustained in a recent match against Real Madrid.
With an impressive record of 15 goals and one assist in 25 games for Bechem United, Konkoni has made a strong case for his inclusion in the national team.
If he is indeed selected, he would be the only locally-based player in Chris Hughton’s squad, despite the coach keeping a close eye on Ghana Premier League matches since his appointment.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Madagascar in an away match on June 18. A victory in this penultimate qualifier would greatly enhance Ghana’s chances of securing qualification for the tournament to be held in Ivory Coast.
