Benin football legend Razak Omotoyossi has died at the age of 38 in his home country, a loss that has sent shockwaves across the African football community.

Born in Nigeria but choosing to represent Benin internationally, Omotoyossi rose to become one of the nation’s all-time greats. He scored 21 goals in 55 appearances for the Squirrels, cementing his place among the country’s top scorers.

His most iconic moment came during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, when he famously netted all four goals in Benin’s emphatic 4-1 victory over rivals Togo, a performance that saw him finish the campaign as joint-top scorer alongside Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o.

At club level, Omotoyossi shone brightest in Sweden with Helsingborgs IF, where his exploits earned him appearances in the UEFA Champions League, before moving to France to join FC Metz. His career also spanned across several countries including South Africa, Libya, Egypt, Syria, and Moldova, where he was admired for his relentless work ethic, clinical finishing, and leadership on the pitch.

Beyond his footballing achievements, Omotoyossi embodied resilience, loyalty, and sacrifice. By pledging his international future to Benin, he carried the nation’s footballing hopes with immense pride, inspiring countless young players across the region.

His passing leaves a huge void in African football, but his legacy as one of Benin’s most celebrated icons will live on for generations to come.
