Lost to Cameroon on penalties in the 2002 final and beaten by Algeria in the 2019 final in Egypt, Senegal have come closer again to winning their first ever Africa Cup of Nations.
A 3-1 semi-final victory over Burkina Faso was clinched on Wednesday and coming Sunday the 2021 AFCON final will be between Senegal versus Cameroon or Egypt.
Either opponent will represent another big test for Aliou Cisse and his charges.
Talents have never been a problem for the Teranga Lions. They have had El Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao, Papa Bouba Diop, Henri Camara, Khalilou Fadiga.
There are mentions of current stars like Sadio Mane of Liverpool, Kalidou Koulibally of Napoli, Edouard Mendy of Chelsea the reigning FIFA Best Goalkeeper of the year, Idrisa Gana of PSG and co.
However the Teranga Lions have lacked what it takes to win a trophy and in both previous finals – in 2002 and 2019 – they were beaten to the Cup by former winners of the competition (Cameroon and Algeria).
