Ghana captain, Andre Ayew’s name was mysteriously missing from the match day squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola in Ghana at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Sportsworldghana.com understands.
According to Ben Osei Bonsu, who’s a close friend of the Ghana captain has revealed on Asempa FM’s SportsNite show that Andre Ayew’s name was not included in the match day squad.
He believes the Black Stars captain might not be happy with events surrounding his drop from the matchday squad in Ghana’s 1-0 win over Angola in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
The Nottingham Forest attacker was seen warming up on the touchline even before the interval but was not subbed on because his name was not on the list for the game by the team’s manager.
Later, it emerged that the 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup winner was left out of the squad entirely for the game with head coach Chris Hughton insisting that he took the decision to drop him from the squad for the game.
Nonetheless, a friend of Ayew, Osei Bonsu, has revealed that the new Team Manager of the Black Stars Ameenu Shardow claims he mistakingly left Andre Ayew’s name out of the matchday squad.
“What we heard was that the Team Manager of the Black Stars, Ameenu Shardow, forgot to include the name of Andre Ayew in the matchday squad for the game,” he told Enoch Worlanyo on Asempa FM’s SportsNite show.
“Some of these excuses are flimsy and it is not proper for us to make it go like that. It is very sad but we should eschew politics from our football. We should know how to manage things when we belong to a different camp. We are all trying to take out unnecessary tension and politics from our Black Stars. But, if some of these things won’t stop it won’t help us,” he added.
Ayew eventually left the Ghana camp together with defender Alexander Djiku after suffering various degrees of injury during and after the game.
