Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has hit back at what he describes as undue pressure from the media following his team’s 1-0 victory over Dreams FC in Matchday 14 at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Speaking after the win, Zito questioned the double standards in media reporting, particularly regarding injury issues, and compared his situation to top European managers.
“Some journalists are unfairly putting pressure on me. When Pep Guardiola says Rodri is injured, nobody complains. But when I say we have 13 injured players, it suddenly becomes a problem,” Zito said.
The coach also defended Kotoko’s position in the league, urging fans and pundits to take a long-term view of the season.
“The league is a marathon. If you’re lambasting me because we were sitting fifth, then you’re not being fair, especially when you know the problems I’m facing,” he added.
Kotoko had entered the clash on a four-match winless streak, which had fueled frustration among supporters, with some openly calling for Zito’s dismissal. The victory over Dreams FC, however, has temporarily eased tensions around his position.
Zito insisted he is not intimidated by the scrutiny or criticism surrounding his role.
“If I leave Kotoko today, nothing will happen to me,” he remarked, emphasizing that the pressure and criticism are unwarranted.
The win moves Kotoko up to third place on the league table with 24 points, and they will face Eleven Wonders in Matchday 15 this weekend, looking to build on their momentum.
