Ghanaian goalkeeper Frederick Asare has completed a move to South African Premier Division side Durban City FC, signing a one-year contract after impressing during a trial period.
The 25-year-old joins the club as a free agent following the end of his contract with Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko. Asare opted not to renew his stay with the Porcupine Warriors after losing his first-team spot to Guinean international Mohammed Camara.
Durban City announced the signing on their official X (formerly Twitter) page, writing:
“Signing Announcement
Durban City FC is proud to welcome Ghanaian international goalkeeper Fredrick Asare to the Club for the 2025/2026 Betway Premiership Season!
Citizens, let’s welcome Fredrick ”
Asare initially joined Asante Kotoko in 2022 after leaving Accra Lions, where he played a pivotal role in their promotion to the Ghana Premier League in 2021. During his time at Kotoko, he made 15 appearances in the just-ended season, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding 12 goals. He also won the Ghana Premier League title with the club.
Despite earning a call-up to the Black Stars last year, Asare is yet to make his debut for the senior national team. His recent lack of playing time at the club level saw him left out of subsequent selections, but the move to South Africa offers a fresh opportunity.
Asare is determined to regain his form and reclaim a spot in the national team setup through consistent performances with Durban City in the upcoming 2025/26 season.
