Former Black Stars midfielder, Derek Boateng, has thrown his weight behind Stephen Appiah’s bid to become the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Boateng, who played alongside Appiah at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, praised Appiah’s leadership qualities and believes he has what it takes to run the affairs of Ghana football.

“A calibre like Stephen Appiah is capable of running Ghana football as Football Association president and he will do it better,” Boateng told Accra-based Kingdom FM.

Boateng recalled his playing days with Appiah, where he was impressed by his work rate and leadership skills.

“During our playing days at the Black Stars, the work rate of Stephen Appiah even during training was surprising and it pushed the entire playing body to do more. All the time, we were training as if we were fighting but we would be joking after the training session because the training session was so tough,” he said.

Appiah, who is a former Juventus midfielder, played 67 times for the Black Stars and scored 15 goals. He has since retired from playing and has served as the team’s Manager and technical team member.

Boateng believes that Appiah’s experience and knowledge of the game make him an ideal candidate for the GFA presidency.

With his endorsement, Boateng is confident that Appiah will bring success to Ghana football. “Both former and current players have respect for him and he understands everything. He is someone who knows what it takes to win and he will put in the hard work to achieve that,” Boateng said.
