Young Ghanaian forward Augustine Boakye has opened up about his deep admiration for Sulley Muntari, whose impressive career has left a lasting impact on younger generations.
In a recent interview with Flashscore, Boakye shared how his love for the former AC Milan and Inter Milan midfielder began with his mother, a dedicated fan of Muntari’s passionate and ambitious playing style. Inspired by his mother’s admiration, Boakye watched Muntari closely and soon found himself emulating the traits that set Muntari apart, particularly his left-footed precision, fearlessness, and commitment on the field.
“Sulley Muntari was my idol growing up because my mum loved him so much. I watched him and also fell in love with him. His passion and ambition stood out. I loved his long-range goals and how he fought for Ghana whenever he played. Even in Europe, he paved the way for young ones like me,” Boakye shared.
Muntari, who enjoyed a distinguished career in Europe, achieved major milestones including a Champions League win with Inter Milan and an FA Cup triumph with Portsmouth. His career tally includes 41 club goals across more than 400 appearances, and for Ghana, he earned 84 caps and scored 20 goals.
Now 23, Boakye signed a four-year contract with French club Saint-Étienne in July. While he’s still adapting, his past performances with WAFA and Wolfsberger have set high expectations, and fans anticipate his potential to shine through soon at Saint-Étienne.
