AFC Sunderland are weighing up a swoop for Sunderland-linked Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu amid ongoing speculation surrounding the future of talismanic talent Antoine Semenyo, according to reports.
The 25-year-old Cherries star has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City in recent days, with several sources suggesting that the Premier League title contenders are in advanced talks to secure his signature this January. It is understood that Semenyo’s release clause – believed to be worth around £65 million – will expire on January 10th, and as such, Pep Guardiola’s side could look to pounce in the coming days.
The report goes on to reiterate Sunderland’s prior interest in the player, stating that both the Black Cats and Everton enquired about Fatawu last summer, with his current employers demanding in excess of £30 million for his services. It is also claimed that Crystal Palace were keen at one stage, prior to him signing for Leicester.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Fatawu admitted that it has always been his dream to play in England, having signed for Leicester on a permanent basis from Sporting CP last year.
He said: “When I started playing football, I’ve been always trying to achieve my dream of playing in England, because that’s the highest place in football. For me, playing in England is the best and I was always dreaming of playing here. So, it’s something that I would say, yes, is a dream, and I keep on believing. I still want to do more as I’m here, and just to be who I am and be a better person.”
