“Support us like Kumasi” – Otto Addo rallies Accra fans ahead of Sudan clash

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has called on football fans in Ghana’s capital, Accra, to show the same level of support that Kumasi fans have offered in recent years, as Ghana prepares for a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan.

The first leg of the doubleheader is scheduled to kick off at 16:00 GMT on Thursday, October 10, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

With the match set to take place in Accra following CAF’s ban on Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium due to poor pitch conditions, Addo expressed his hope that the capital’s fans will rally behind the team with the same passion seen in Kumasi.

“I am happy, like I said before, that we can play this match here [in Accra]. The national team hasn’t played here for a long time… hopefully, we get the support from all the spectators. Sometimes during the game, things can go bad, like the first half against Central African Republic [in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers], but Kumasi was still supporting us. This is what I hope because we need the support of the whole Ghana to win this game,” Addo said during a pre-match press conference.

West Ham United’s star Mohammed Kudus will captain the Black Stars for the match, as the team aims to secure vital points in the AFCON qualifying campaign.

Accra Sports Stadium was cleared by CAF to host the game after Ghana’s scramble for a suitable venue following the Baba Yara Stadium ban. The Kumasi-based stadium has served as the Black Stars’ home for years, but Addo hopes Accra fans will fill the gap and provide much-needed encouragement.

The Black Stars will need all the support they can get as they fight to improve their standings in Group F, with only one point from two games so far.
