Brighton and Hove Albion defender Tariq Lamptey says helping Ghana to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be an ‘amazing’ feeling for him as he targets his first appearance at the continental showpiece.
The right-back is yet to feature for Ghana at the AFCON after only switching nationality before the 2022 FIFA World Cup where he made two appearances in the group stage. Tariq made his Black Stars debut in an international friendly against Brazil ahead of the tournament.
He had previously played for England’s young teams before deciding to represent Ghana.
But he says he looks forward to playing in the ‘amazing’ AFCON and hopefully winning it.
“I am very excited. Obviously, there are a few steps before that — qualification first and league games I have to play to get myself into a competitive form. But it’s an amazing competition and the ultimate goal will be to go and lift it,” he told Joy Sports in an interview.
“It will be amazing to play there and experience it and hopefully we can do well.”
The 22-year-old is currently working on recovering from an injury that kept him out for the final part of the season and hence has seen him miss out on the AFCON qualifier against Madagascar.
