Former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has questioned the Ghana Football Association’s decision to dismiss him, insisting the expectations placed on him by the federation were unrealistic despite guiding Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking in an interview with German football magazine 11Freunde, the 51-year-old revealed he was never given a clear explanation for his dismissal, which came in March just months before the World Cup.
According to Addo, the decision left him puzzled, especially after successfully leading the Black Stars to qualification for football’s biggest tournament.
The former Ghana international argued that it was unfair to judge his long-term project based on defeats in friendly matches against top European opposition, including Germany and Austria.
Addo also described the pressure surrounding the national team setup, suggesting that the environment made it difficult to implement a stable long-term vision.
“I still, to this day, haven’t understood the reason. The expectations from our federation president were simply too high,” Addo said.
The former Borussia Dortmund assistant was relieved of his duties following Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart and a 5-1 loss to Austria in international friendlies.
Despite his departure, Addo believes those results should not have overshadowed the progress made under his leadership, particularly securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
