Incoming Ghana national football team assistant coach Roger De Sa has outlined the team’s mindset ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the focus will be on delivering a performance that makes the nation proud rather than setting rigid targets for victory.
The South African tactician is set to join head coach Carlos Queiroz following the departure of Otto Addo in March, after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany in international friendlies.
De Sa and Queiroz share a long-standing professional relationship, having previously worked together with the national teams of Iran and Egypt. Their reunion is expected to bring tactical experience and stability as Ghana prepares for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Speaking to South African media outlet KickOff, De Sa downplayed expectations of winning specific targets, instead highlighting national pride and representation.
“It’s all it is, we will do the best we can, there is no mandate to win this and that,” he said. “The job is to go to the World Cup and fly the Ghanaian flag as high as possible.”
The new technical team is expected to be officially unveiled in Accra on Thursday, April 23, after which preparations for the tournament will begin in full.
As part of their build-up, Ghana are scheduled to play two high-profile friendlies against Mexico and Wales on June 2, aimed at fine-tuning the squad ahead of the competition.
At the tournament, the Black Stars have been drawn in Group L, where they will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
The appointment of Queiroz and De Sa signals a new direction for Ghana as they look to improve on disappointing group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022.
