Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has identified the lack of mentorship from senior players as a major factor in the team’s disappointing performance in the just-concluded 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.
The Porcupine Warriors finished a dismal 6th on the league log with 49 points, far from their usual high standards.
Ogum expressed his disappointment at the senior players’ failure to guide and mentor the younger players, which he believes led to an imbalance in the team.
“The senior players who were supposed to guide them [the young players] did not give them enough mentorship and I think that created imbalance in the team,” he said.
The lack of harmony in the team was also attributed to this lack of mentorship, according to Ogum.
“We did not also have harmony because of this lack of mentorship from the senior players,” he added.
With the season now over, Asante Kotoko have released 11 players, including captain Ibrahim Danlad, Isaac Oppong, and others.
The coach will be looking to rebuild the team and instill a sense of responsibility and leadership among the remaining players.
