The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, delivered a powerful message to the Black Stars players, reminding them that the team’s legacy predates their existence.
With Otto Addo’s squad facing challenges in their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, including a 1-0 defeat to Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and a 1-1 draw against Niger, Okraku’s words come at a crucial time. The team’s lackluster performances have sparked criticism from Ghanaians, leaving them in an uninspiring position in Group F.
Okraku visited the team’s camp on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, just days before their crucial double-header against Sudan, which kicks off on October 10 at the Accra Sports Stadium. He encouraged the players to reflect on their past mistakes against Angola and Niger.
“In 1957, Ghana gained independence, led by men with courage; men who did not flee from the battlefield. That’s why we achieved independence,” he stated.
He went on to emphasize the history of the Black Stars: “When [Mohammed] Kudus, you weren’t born, this team—Black Stars—already existed. Alexander [Djiku], before you were born, this team called Black Stars was here. So, before any of you were born, Black Stars existed.”
Okraku posed a critical question to the players: “The question now is, in your time, what will be the difference? The difference lies in what you do with the opportunities given to you.”
As the Black Stars prepare to face Sudan, the upcoming matches represent a vital opportunity for redemption in their AFCON qualifying campaign.
