”There’s no need inviting familiar faces for friendlies” – Dan Quaye tells Otto Addo

Former Black Stars defender Dan Quaye has expressed reservations regarding the recent selection decisions made by Ghana coach Otto Addo for friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda.

Despite the matches being intended to maintain the team’s form for upcoming fixtures, Ghana suffered a 2-1 loss to the Super Eagles and managed only a 2-2 draw against Uganda.

Quaye stressed the significance of resting regular players during such exhibitions and instead advocated for providing opportunities to fresh faces within the squad.

Having previously represented Hearts of Oak, Quaye urged Addo to look beyond the established members of the Black Stars during friendlies, suggesting the inclusion of players with limited or no prior national team experience for assessment.

“We already know some of the players in the team so I think there was no need inviting them for the international friendly games but rather new players who haven’t played before,” Quaye emphasized.

In contrast to Quaye’s sentiments, Addo’s recent call-ups included newcomers like Ibrahim Osman, Ebenezer Annan, Francis Abu, and Forson Amankwah, signaling a shift towards integrating new talent into the squad.

Ghana’s performance in 2024 has been lackluster, failing to secure a victory in six games thus far. With a crucial World Cup qualifier against Mali approaching in June in Bamako, Quaye’s critique highlights the pressing need for strategic selection decisions aimed at rejuvenating the team’s performance and achieving positive outcomes on the global stage.
