Former Black Stars coach C.K. Akonnor has called on Ghanaians to rally behind the national team and head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the squad selected for the tournament reflects the experience and expertise of the technical team.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Akonnor expressed confidence in the coach’s decisions and urged fans to avoid unnecessary criticism of player selections.
“I believe we have appointed an experienced coach, someone who has seen it all. In fact, the players he has selected for the World Cup clearly show his experience,” Akonnor said.

The former Black Stars boss noted that while football opinions will always differ, the final decisions should be left to the coach and his technical team.
“We shouldn’t be overly worried about the squad. I know there are thousands of coaches in Ghana, and everyone will have their own opinion. I believe we should leave the decision-making to him, especially on matters of selection.”
Akonnor stressed that the most important responsibility of supporters at this stage is to provide encouragement and positive energy to the team.
“What we need to do now is support him with a positive spirit,”he added.
The current Gor Mahia head coach also challenged the tendency to place greater value on players competing in Europe’s top leagues while overlooking local and lesser-known talents.
“Sometimes we give too much respect to players from the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A. Our boys are also doing well, and we must believe in them.”
Akonnor concluded by reiterating his faith in the Black Stars squad and their ability to deliver on the biggest stage.
“I strongly believe in this team, and I know they will do well.”
