Ghana’s U23 national team, known as the Black Meteors, currently holds the third position in Group A of the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Their standing in the group follows a humiliating 5-1 defeat by the host nation, Morocco, on Tuesday night under the leadership of Ibrahim Tanko.
With two wins in their first two games, Morocco sits comfortably at the top of the group with 6 points, while Guinea holds the second position with 3 points. Ghana finds itself in third place, trailing behind Guinea due to goal difference.
After a promising start in the first round of matches, where Ghana topped the group, they have now slipped to third place.
The Black Meteors face a crucial final group game against Guinea on Friday, June 30, 2023, which they must win to surpass Guinea and secure a spot in the semifinals of the competition.
During the match against Morocco, the Black Meteors had a disastrous beginning to both halves, displaying a lack of coordination, poor defensive play, and overall sloppiness.
In their opening game, the Black Meteors managed a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Congo, who were making their tournament debut.
Ghana’s path to the semifinals now hinges on their ability to emerge victorious against Guinea on Friday, allowing them to overtake Guinea in the group standings.
