Black Princesses goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku has praised her teammates’ determination following their 1-2 loss to Austria in the opening match of the 2024 U20 Women’s World Cup.
Despite a late goal from Stella Nyamekye, which came too late to alter the outcome, Ghana’s defeat on Monday night in Colombia has put them in a tough position as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
Reflecting on the match, Amenyeku commented, “As a goalkeeper, I would say football is a game of chance. When the opponent capitalizes on their opportunities, it’s a goal we could have avoided, but that’s just how football is.”
She added, “I’m impressed with my teammates’ performance and determination. We were all focused on winning, but unfortunately, we fell short.”
The Black Princesses will face Japan, who won their opener 7-0, on Thursday, September 5. Ghana will need to secure a top-two finish in Group E or be one of the best third-place teams to advance to the knockout stage for the first time.
