Uganda is dreaming of making it to the World Cup for the first time in its history, but the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was unsuccessful. The team faced serious problems, and now its chances of going to North America are in jeopardy. We analyze the key matches, prospects for improving the situation, and the team’s best players. You can bet on the national team matches at 22bet Uganda. The company offers an excellent line on various football tournaments and championships in other sports.

Important matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers: a bad start

Uganda’s national team approached the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with high hopes, but the first matches showed that reaching the World Cup would be a difficult test. Despite their efforts, the team lost important points and now finds itself in a situation where every next clash becomes decisive.

The 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Africa are being held in a fiercely competitive struggle. Uganda’s opponents in the group are such strong teams as Algeria, Mozambique, Botswana, Guinea and Somalia. Eritrea was eliminated, so there were fewer problems. On paper, the Cranes could have claimed the fight for second place, but the reality was more complicated. Uganda’s path in the first four matches was half successful:

  • The first match against Guinea ended with a minimal defeat 1-2. The game was boring, and the fans took the loss the hardest, because the Ugandans conceded in the last seconds.
  • Then came a successful streak: Somalia and Botswana won with a minimal 1-0 – the squad was modest, so the results corresponded. But they took 6 points and that is the most important thing.
  • They failed to beat Algeria, although they led for 36 minutes and did not allow a single shot on target in the first half! However, in the second half, Uganda missed 2 dangerous attacks and conceded, and then the Algerians did not make any mistakes.

One of the main disappointments was the team’s attacking potential. In the first four matches, they scored 4 and conceded the same number, so there is no reason to praise the defense. Without a clear attacking strategy, it will be difficult for Uganda to succeed.

Can Uganda improve and qualify for the World Cup?

Despite the unsuccessful start, there is still a chance to improve the situation. There are matches against weaker opponents ahead, which means there is still an opportunity to earn the necessary points. The main thing is to draw the right conclusions and make adjustments to tactics.

To return to the fight for a place at the 2026 World Cup, Uganda needs to:

  • Improve their attacking play. The team clearly lacks sharpness in attack. The forwards get few chances, and the midfield does not have time to support offensive actions.
  • Increase the reliability of the defense. In several matches, the defense made mistakes that cost the team important points. To succeed, it is necessary to maintain concentration throughout the match.
  • Use the home factor. Games at home stadiums are a chance to earn important points. The support of the fans can make all the difference in key matches.
  • Work on tactical changes. The head coach must adapt the team’s play to the characteristics of the opponents. Perhaps it is worth betting on a more pragmatic style focused on counterattacks.

The rivals do not intend to slow down, so Uganda must show their best football in the remaining matches.

The best players of the Uganda national team

Despite the difficult situation in the selection, Uganda has several bright players who can lead the team forward.

  • Rogers Mato is one of the most talented players of the national team, possessing a good pass and the ability to shoot from long range. His creativity can be a key factor in the team’s attacking play.
  • Khalid Lwaliwa is a reliable center back who tries to organize the team’s defense. He is strong in one-on-one battles and knows how to win high balls.
  • Kenneth Semakula is another promising young star.

The Ugandan national team faced serious problems at the beginning of the qualification, but there is still hope for success. The team urgently needs to change the game, work on tactics and convert moments. Otherwise, the dream of the first World Cup will remain unfulfilled.
