In a notable comeback, Dreams FC attacker John Duku Antwi secures a place in the Black Stars’ 55-man provisional list for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The list, released by Coach Chris Hughton on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, features familiar faces such as the Ayew brothers, Thomas Partey, Daniel Amartey, and Inaki Williams.
Antwi stands among the eleven home-based players included in the provisional squad, showcasing the blend of talent from both local and international leagues. Chris Hughton has until January 3 to finalize the selection, narrowing down the squad to the final 27 players for the upcoming AFCON.
Previously earning call-ups to the Black Stars in 2017 and 2020 for World Cup and AFCON qualifiers, Antwi brings his experience back to the national team. Having last played for the West African giants in 2020, his return is marked by impactful performances, notably aiding Dreams FC in reaching the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Antwi’s goal-scoring contributions have been instrumental for Dreams FC, positioning them favorably for progression to the knockout stage of the Confederations Cup. With his selection in the provisional squad, Antwi aims to secure a spot in the final roster for the major AFCON tournament set to take place in Ivory Coast next month.
Ghana, placed in Group B of the 2023 AFCON alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, seeks to add to its legacy of four AFCON titles, with the last triumph dating back to 1982. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13, concluding on February 11, 2024.
