In the buildup to Ghana’s crucial 2023 AFCON qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR) on Thursday, September 7, at the Baba Yara Stadium, fans turned out in large numbers to express their support for the embattled Black Stars Captain, Andre Dede Ayew.
The veteran forward’s inclusion in the Stars’ lineup has sparked intense debate, given that the 33-year-old is currently without a club after his short-term contract with English Premier League side Nottingham Forest expired at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
Ayew was named in the 25-man Black Stars squad by head coach Chris Hughton, which needs either a win or a draw against CAR to secure its place at the upcoming AFCON tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.
In a viral video, fans mobbed the Black Stars’ bus as it made its way to the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, repeatedly chanting Andre Ayew’s name as a clear show of support for his inclusion in the starting lineup.
Ayew is poised to compete in the AFCON for the ninth time in his illustrious career.
