Black Queens head coach Kim Bjorkegren remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances of progressing to the knockout stage of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), despite a difficult start to the tournament.
Ahead of Monday’s decisive Group C match against Tanzania, the Swedish tactician expressed belief in his team’s ability to turn things around.
“I think we are in a great position,” Bjorkegren said. “We only need to win one game to reach the quarterfinals. We can still finish second or even qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. I believe in these players, even though we have just one point so far.”
Ghana find themselves in a must-win situation after earning only one point from their first two games—a 2-0 defeat to defending champions South Africa followed by a 1-1 draw with Mali. They are currently level on points with Tanzania at the bottom of Group C.
South Africa and Mali lead the group with four points each, making Monday’s showdown a final opportunity for both Ghana and Tanzania to secure qualification.
The crucial fixture kicks off at 19:00 GMT on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane, with everything on the line for the Black Queens.
