Ghana’s Black Starlets faulted in their tournament opener against Nigeria at Cape Coast in the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship.
Ghana could not stand a dominant Nigeria team on Sunday afternoon as they kick-started the U17 tournament in Ghana.
Ghana had majority of the ball in the first 10 minutes of the game but failed to create any danger despite the large amount of possession.
Emmanuel Michael gave the Nigerians the lead in the 12th minute with a delicious left footed free-kick.
The youngsters from Nigeria got a second in the 43rd minute before halftime through Precious Williams after a poor goalkeeping.
Jubril Azeez scored in the 53rd minute after goalkeeper Amadu Dembarah made an error to continue from where they left off.
Abdul Razak Salifu pulled one back for Ghana in the 58th minute but Nigeria found a fourth in the 78th minute from a corner kick.
Ghana was awarded a late penalty and captain Collins Agyemang stepped up in the 88th minute to make it 4-2 which was the final score.
A defeat for the Black Starlets as they kick start the campaign and Coach Paa Kwesi Fabin and his charges will need to improve.
The WAFU U17 tournament in Cape Coast is a qualification series for the Africa U17 Championship in Algeria in 2023.
