“We are not a bad team, we will do well at the World Cup” — Fred Pappoe

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Fred Pappoe remains confident in the Black Stars’ prospects at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the team has enough quality to compete despite recent struggles and a drop in FIFA rankings.

Ghana have fallen to 74th in the latest FIFA Coca-Cola rankings, but Pappoe believes the potential of the squad likely to be selected for the final tournament remains encouraging.

Speaking to Citi Sports, he admitted uncertainty over the final squad list but maintained faith in the overall talent pool available to the national team.

“I don’t have an idea as to what is going to be the final 26. But at the end of the day, if you’re looking at who could possibly be in the 26, it gives me comfort. I don’t think our team is necessarily bad. I do not subscribe to that,” he said.

Pappoe emphasised that belief, mentality, and proper technical direction will be key to Ghana’s success on the global stage.

“Once we have the players with the right calibre of mind, the right mentality and the right approach, I’m not one who looks down on my team. I’m very hopeful with the array of players we have,” he added.

He further expressed confidence that the appointment of a new head coach will help stabilise the team and improve performance ahead of the tournament.

“I think we’ll do well. I’m sure this is just a spot on the way. I’m sure we’ll get over it and get a new coach in place,” he noted.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England in Boston and Croatia in Philadelphia.
