Renowned journalist Kwabena Yeboah has added his voice to the growing calls for Asante Kotoko’s midfielder, Richmond Lamptey, to be included in Ghana’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Yeboah contends that Lamptey, hailed as the best player in the Ghana Premier League, should not be overlooked for the AFCON squad, emphasizing the importance of having the league’s top midfielder represent Ghana. He asserts that Lamptey’s skills surpass some of the current midfielders in the national team and playing in Ghana should not be a deterrent.
“We cannot go to Cote d’Ivoire leaving the Premier League’s best midfielder behind. It would be an indictment on our league. Besides, Lamptey is better than some of the midfielders in the team. It shouldn’t be a crime for one to play in Ghana,” Yeboah stated, as quoted by ghanasportspage.
Lamptey’s stellar performance in Kotoko’s 3-2 victory over Hearts of Oak in the super clash has fueled the clamor for his inclusion in the Black Stars. His technical prowess and exceptional passing have impressed many, leading to a belief that a player of his caliber deserves a spot in the national team.
As Ghana’s AFCON squad is set to be announced later in December, the debate over Lamptey’s potential inclusion continues to gain momentum in anticipation of the continental tournament in Ivory Coast in January 2024.
