Gregg Berhalter, head coach of the US Men’s team, believes that Ghana could have suffered an even more significant defeat to his side.

The Black Stars faced humiliation in an international friendly at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee, where Berhalter’s team dominated the first half, scoring goals from Giovanni Reyna (twice), Christian Pulisic, and Leon Balogun, leading to a commanding lead in less than 40 minutes.

However, Ghana showed resilience in the second half, preventing further damage to the already embarrassing scoreline.

After the game, Berhalter commended Ghana’s determination in the second half, stating that the Black Stars could have suffered a more significant defeat if they had given up.

“Being down four-nothing at halftime, Ghana had a choice; they could have given up in the second half and potentially lost eight-nothing, but they didn’t do that,” Berhalter stated, as quoted by Citi Sports.

“They kept fighting until the last minute of the game. They didn’t play a great half, but they didn’t give up, and that’s an important quality that a team shows.”

Ghana has now suffered back-to-back defeats in the international friendlies this month, with Mexico also defeating them 2-0 the previous Sunday.

The Black Stars will face Madagascar and Comoros in the first two games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November.
